Android release a slew of features, some more odds than others
Android release Gemini & emoji breeding features / google.com
It's a big day for our green-bubble friends.
Google have shipped a bunch of AI features to Android devices, some around Gemini capabilities, some around… emoji breeding?!
Gemini, your Android friend
Out of the six features announced by Google, two are announced as being 'powered by Gemini':
Hear image descriptions. Designed for blind and low-vision communities, Android's Image Q&A now uses Gemini to provide more detailed image descriptions. Upload an image and Gemini does the rest; understanding what the image is and generating a description. Users can then interact with Gemini to get more info about the image.
Gemini in third-party apps. Android are releasing a bunch of extensions to connect apps with Gemini. For example, the Spotify <> Gemini extension allows users to ask for songs based on a mood, the Maps <> Gemini extension gives users access to more places information, and so on.
Other (still likely AI-driven) features include...
...better video captions, capturing the intensity and emotions of the speaker. Expect to read [applause] as the crowd goes wild, [laughter] as the comedian cracks a joke, and [whisper] as the romcom protagonist murmurs sweet nothings to their partner.
On the fun side of things, Android now allows you to merge emojis. Just like breeding seemingly random Pokemon would create a brand new Pokemon, you can combine two emojis to create a third (sorry, couldn't think of a better analogy).
Can't wait to see what people create...
Finally, Android also release higher-quality document scans and the ability to share images & videos via QR code.
Big day for Android users and emoji breeders.
