Peloton's Strength product is out of beta
Peloton’s Strength+ app / peloton.com
Christmas is just around the corner. This time of year, there are two kinds of people: those who double down on their exercise and diet for the final stretch, and those who give up early.
Peloton are banking on the first kind of people with the release of their new Strength Plus product, a standalone audio-based strength training app.
"More reps," he whispered
Peloton's strength training app is an interesting case of parallel product diversification. Peloton are, of course, known for their bike product. With the Strength app, they're hoping to capture a whole new market:
The app is only $10/month. Considering a Peloton bike is ~£1,400 and the subscription £39/mo, this is much more affordable.
The app is audio-only, compared to Peloton's video- & streaming-heavy classes which cost a lot of money to create and run.
The app doesn't rely on special Peloton equipment. Any weights will do. Again, compared to the Peloton bike, this should open up the market.
Could this be the play?
Peloton have suffered since the heyday of the pandemic.
Back in 2021, when everyone was stuck at home, spending 2k on a Peloton bike seemed like a great idea; their stock shot up to $162 a share.
Then, the pandemic ended and so did the rally. Today, Peloton stock sits at ~$10, a slight uptick from its lowest point at $3.
More fun than working out. Peloton competitor Ladder released a bunch of clapback videos on social media, highlighting the, ahem, similarities between the two apps. Classic.
