What if searching on social networks worked?

Threads launch new search features

Threads introduce new search features / meta.com

Threads are giving it a good crack, at least.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, recently announced a series of filters and other product improvements would start rolling out. The new search feature is the first to reach users.

In the search bar, tap on the menu on the right and you’ll see the option to refine your search by a profile and date range. This update is rolling out globally in the coming weeks — if you don’t see it yet, you will soon 🫶”, per @Threads

The filters are simple: users can search by keyword, before date, after date, and profile.

Seems like a simple enough feature...

...but is it?

Back when Elon was walking into Twitter HQ with a sink, improving Twitter search was seen as a huge priority. George Hotz, famous for jailbreaking the iPhone, publicly tweeted to Elon that he'd be able to fix search in 12 weeks (the tweet has since been deleted).

Hotz joined Twitter after the acquisition but left about a month later, having made "no significant progress".

Perhaps Bluesky, Threads, et al. can crack the proverbial code.
